Halkidiki – an idyllic region for a holiday

Halkidiki, the three-fingered peninsula which juts out into the Aegean Sea from the north of the Greek mainland really is an idyllic region for a holiday. It blends a hot climate, miles of golden soft sand coastline with great food and a majestic nature.

Kassandra is the most western peninsula and popular for those who are looking for a lively and entertaining experience. There are many wonderful hotel resorts to choose from along its coastline. The neighbouring peninsula is called Sithonia, where there are charming fishing villages and forests scattered over this peninsula and perfect for those who prefer a quieter time. Athos is the eastern peninsula and is not accessible by the general public, hosting a monastic community that can only be visited by male travellers under special permission.

Where to stay

During my recent visit to Halkidiki, I stayed on the Kassandra peninsula at the Domes Noruz Kassandra resort. It is located in Hanioti, just 92kms (1hour) from Thessaloniki airport and very close to the bustling village, which means that you not only have the facilities of the resort at your disposal but also all the cafes, restaurants and shops within easy walking distance of the village.

Domes Noruz Kassandra is one of the many Domes resorts across Greece, which include family resorts and adults only resorts, this one being the latter with a minimum age of 16 years.

The first thing I noticed on arrival was the warm welcome from the customer service reception staff. They greet guests with a welcome drink and moist towel to freshen up after your journey. I arrived in May and the temperature was already in the low 20°s so this was very welcome.

Welcome to Domes

The resort itself has benefited from a complete refurbishment only a couple of years ago, so everything feels new, fresh and sophisticated. The rooms are modern and well thought out with just about anything you might need for a comfortable stay.

If you like to party on a Saturday night (or Friday for that matter!) there is the DNK Beach Club which sits amongst a pristine white sandy beach with crystal clear turquoise waters and palm trees. This is where memories are made that you will keep with you for a long time

The resort also has two gyms, one of them being outdoor with fabulous views out to sea. This is where you can also participate in either sunrise or sunset yoga classes, taking care of your physical and also mental health.

The main restaurant is of a really high standard offering local and international cuisine, but you can also enjoy a smaller menu of great snacks at the beachside Topos bar where the friendly staff will serve you with a smile.
