Where to Find Sunshine in Europe This April

By the time April arrives, many of us are ready to leave the grey winter days behind and enjoy a little sunshine.

The good news is that several European destinations begin to warm up nicely at this time of year. Spring brings longer days, comfortable temperatures and a more relaxed atmosphere before the busy summer season begins.

For travellers who enjoy exploring without the crowds of peak summer, April can be a wonderful month for a European escape.

Here are a few destinations where you can often find some early sunshine.

The Canary Islands

Located off the northwest coast of Africa, the Canary Islands are one of the most reliable places in Europe for sunshine throughout the year.

Islands such as Tenerife and Lanzarote often enjoy temperatures in the low to mid-20s in April. This makes them perfect for relaxing by the pool, enjoying scenic coastal walks or exploring the islands’ dramatic volcanic landscapes.

With a flight time of around four and a half hours from the UK, the Canary Islands remain one of the most dependable spring sunshine destinations.

Southern Spain

Southern Spain begins to enjoy beautiful spring weather in April, making it a wonderful time to visit before the intense heat of midsummer arrives.

Regions such as Andalusia offer warm sunshine, charming historic cities and an authentic Spanish atmosphere. Coastal destinations along the Costa del Sol provide lovely beaches, excellent resorts and relaxed seaside towns.

Cities such as Seville and Granada are also particularly appealing in spring, when orange blossoms fill the air and outdoor cafés begin to buzz with life.

Crete

As Greece’s largest island, Crete begins to enjoy pleasant spring weather in April, and is one of may favourite destinations to visit - actually at any time of year - as pictured above!

While the sea may still feel refreshing, the daytime sunshine is often perfect for exploring the island’s beautiful towns, scenic coastline and historic landmarks.

Visiting at this time of year also allows travellers to experience Crete before the summer crowds arrive, making it a wonderful option for those who prefer a quieter, more relaxed holiday.

The Algarve

Portugal’s southern coastline, known as the Algarve, is another excellent choice for an April getaway.

Spring sunshine is common, and temperatures are usually very comfortable for outdoor activities such as golf, coastal walks and exploring the region’s picturesque towns and villages.

The Algarve’s dramatic cliffs, golden beaches and relaxed atmosphere make it a lovely destination for a refreshing early-season break.

Sicily

For travellers who enjoy combining sunshine with culture and history, Sicily is a wonderful option in April.

The weather is typically mild and pleasant, making it ideal for exploring historic cities, visiting vineyards and discovering the island’s many archaeological sites.

Spring also brings vibrant landscapes, with green countryside and blooming flowers creating a particularly beautiful setting for travel.

Why April Is Such a Lovely Time to Travel

Travelling in April has several advantages. The weather across southern Europe is usually warm and comfortable, destinations feel relaxed, and the busy summer crowds have not yet arrived.

Hotels are preparing for the new season, restaurants reopen their terraces, and many places feel wonderfully welcoming after the quieter winter months.

For many travellers, April offers one of the most enjoyable times to explore Europe.
