It’s time to pack my bags again and head out to one of my favourite Greek islands; Rhodes. Rhodes is the largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands and a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Rhodes has a long and impressive history; it’s a place where the strong mediaeval aspect blends with the traditional Greek one. An island with great natural beauty, the lovely beaches face the pine woods on the mountainsides, whilst the mountain villages overlook the seaside towns. This island has something to offer every traveller.
There are many fabulous hotel resorts to stay in but the last time I was there I visited the Grecotel LUXME Dama Dama which is situated a short taxi drive from Rhodes Old Town on the north-east coast of the island. It’s a beautiful resort and extremely welcoming.
If you’re planning a trip to Rhodes, here are the top 5 places you must visit:
1. Rhodes Old Town
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rhodes Old Town is a medieval marvel that will transport you back in time. Wander through its maze of cobblestone streets lined with ancient buildings, palaces, and churches. Don’t miss the Palace of the Grand Master, a stunning example of medieval architecture, and the Street of the Knights, where medieval knights once lived. Be sure to visit the Archaeological Museum to learn more about the island’s rich history.
2. Lindos
Located on the eastern coast of Rhodes, Lindos is a picturesque village known for its whitewashed houses and stunning Acropolis perched on a hill overlooking the sea. Climb to the top of the Acropolis for breathtaking views of the surrounding area, including the village below and the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea. After exploring the Acropolis, relax on one of Lindos’ beautiful beaches or wander through the village’s narrow streets filled with shops and cafes.
3. Valley of the Butterflies
If you’re a nature lover, the Valley of the Butterflies is a must-visit destination on Rhodes. Located near the village of Theologos, this lush valley is home to thousands of butterflies that flock here during the summer months. Take a leisurely stroll along the wooden walkways that wind through the valley, admiring the colourful butterflies fluttering among the trees and flowers. The valley is also home to a small museum where you can learn more about these delicate creatures.
4. Prasonisi
For adventure seekers and water sports enthusiasts, Prasonisi is the place to be. Located at the southern tip of Rhodes, Prasonisi is where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean Sea, creating a unique landscape of sandy beaches and rocky cliffs. The strong winds that blow through this area make it a popular spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Even if you’re not into water sports, the natural beauty of Prasonisi is worth a visit.
5. Seven Springs
Tucked away in a lush valley near the village of Kolymbia, Seven Springs is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The springs get their name from the seven natural springs that feed into a small lake surrounded by towering pine trees. Take a leisurely walk along the shaded footpaths that wind through the valley, crossing wooden bridges and passing by streams and waterfalls. Seven Springs is the perfect place to escape the heat and hustle of the coast and immerse yourself in nature.
Now, although it’s not Rhodes itself, Symi Island is a 50 minutes short boat trip away and it’s absolutely worth booking a day trip to explore. The island is picturesque and quaint and a full day boat trip is easily one of the best ways to see it.
Once there, make sure to explore Chora and Pedi Beach and stop off at; Marathounda Beach, Panormitis Monastery and the old town of Symi itself.
In conclusion, Rhodes is a destination that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether you’re exploring ancient ruins in Rhodes Old Town, soaking up the sun on Lindos’ beaches, or marvelling at the butterflies in the Valley of the Butterflies, this island has something for everyone.
